A story · a kid's own device

Out of sight, out of mind.

The checklist works… until they walk away.

A nine-panel comic. Before: a boy reads the checklist on the fridge, walks away, gets distracted by Lego, and Mom has to ask whether he brushed his teeth. After: an old phone is set up with one scan, kept in a dock outside his room; he picks it up, takes it with him, ticks off each step, uses a distraction-free focus screen, and puts it back on the dock when he's done.

Before

The checklist works… until they walk away.

  1. 1They check the list…

Get dressed, brush teeth, pack backpack, shoes on. “Brush teeth. Got it!” A sticky note says You can do it!

  2. 2…walk away…

Up the stairs, fully meaning to. The list stays on the fridge.

  3. 3…and get distracted.

“Just a few minutes.” The Lego bin was open. It always is.

  4. 4“Did you brush your teeth yet?”

“…Oh.” The checklist works — as long as they're standing beside it.

After

The support goes with them. Same routine. More independence.

  1. 1Quick and easy setup.

An old phone or tablet. No separate account. Scan once from the family board, and this device shows only their day.

  2. 2Their own little sidekick.

It lives in a dock, on a charger, somewhere safe — outside their room. They pick it up and start their day. Now: brush teeth.

  3. 3It goes with them.

Bathroom, bedroom, anywhere. They check off each step as they go. Brush teeth — done. Next.

  4. 4Focus mode.

No games, no notifications, no other apps. Just their next step, and a ring that shows how long. Pause, or done.

  5. 5Back when they're done.

Return it to the dock for next time. Great job today! Ready for tomorrow.

The next step, right where they need it.

Nothing was bought. The old phone in the drawer becomes theirs with one scan from the family board — no account, no password, nothing on it but their own day. Same tools, different needs. Fewer reminders, more confidence. That is what Here When You Are is for.
