What was next?

Remembering what to do next can be hard. Sound familiar?

A ten-panel comic. Before: a boy wakes up knowing he should brush his teeth, runs downstairs to check the list, forgets it on the way back up, gets distracted by Lego, and ends up wondering what he was supposed to do. After: the same phone is docked outside his bedroom door; he checks in, sees his first task, brushes his teeth with the timer beside him, ticks it off and sees what's next.

Before

So easy to get distracted…

  1. 1Wake up!

“Okay. I need to brush my teeth first.” He knows. He really does.

  2. 2Run downstairs to check what to do.

The list is on the kitchen wall. Teeth, get dressed, make bed, breakfast, backpack.

  3. 3Go back upstairs.

“Teeth first, then… what was next?” Two stairs and it's gone.

  4. 4Get distracted!

The Lego is right there. “Just five minutes of playing.”

  5. 5Oops!

“What am I supposed to do now?” It's not that he doesn't want to. It's just hard to remember.

After

Right steps. Right where they are. Less stress. More independence.

  1. 1Step out of the bedroom.

Same boy, same hair, same bunny.

  2. 2The phone is docked outside the room.

The old one, on a little stand by his door. One button: Check in. That's the start of the day.

  3. 3See the first task, right here.

Brush teeth. Then get dressed, make bed, breakfast. Only the first one is lit up.

  4. 4Do it, right where you are.

The phone comes to the bathroom. The timer keeps him company — two minutes is a ring, not a number.

  5. 5Check it off and see what's next.

“I did it! What's next?” Get dressed. No trip downstairs. He stays in the flow.

Same routine. Happier mornings.

Nothing new was bought. The list didn't change. What changed is where the list is — in his hand, one step at a time — so the thing he wanted to do all along is the thing that happens. Here When You Are: with you today, a brighter tomorrow.
